Ar Thóir Athnuachana (In Pursuit of Renewal)
Briefly - an exhibition of new works by John Philip Murray
was opened by Iarla Ó Lionaird at the Ionad Cultúrtha, Baile
Mhuirne, Co Chorcaí on the 8th November 2005.
The centre piece is a large triptych which gives the exhibition
its title. It is concerned with a depiction of humanity in relation to: 1)
the environment which it has built around itself and 2) the notion of landscape.
Other works in this exhibition include two, somewhat smaller
paintings, in diptych format, exploring similar themes to the centre piece.
Smaller again are six landscape paintings. There are four intense small drawings
in graphite on paper which document variously - humans, landscapes and labyrinths.
The original study for the largest triptych is also included. Five other drawings
are part of the train that led to this exhibition. These are life drawings
in sanguine chalk on Ingres laid paper. Unlike all the other works in this
exhibition they are 'direct observation' drawings, rigourously recording the
model.
