Vanishing Day (Diptych)

Oil on cotton 102x152cm. 2007

This substantial piece contains two sets of obscured images in light colours. These have been drawn into the paint and are seen, on closer examination, to be two individual heads, an arching doorway and the remains of a classical column. One of the heads could depict a triumphal bust, or it may just be sporting an elaborate collar. The other head seems to be emerging from some sort of cloud, or haze. The architectural features are simultaneously achievements but have an air of mysterious futility. At the centre of these light images are four dark, yet richly vibrating panels of green and blue, with a barely visible hint of a drawn shape, re-echoed in a deep red below.
